I completed my teacher training at Hamilton Teachers’ College and have been teaching in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty for 25 years. Over the years I have developed a real passion for Maths. I have always loved teaching and being able to help students succeed. Maths is so often a stumbling block for students and with my mathZwise programme I am now seeing students reach their potential and achieve at levels they often did not think possible.
In 2003 I was teaching Maths at a local high school and then won the position of principal at a small, rural primary school. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding, the school was closed and rather than go back into the system I helped several parents begin to home-school their children. I found there was a real need in the area of Maths and several of my ex-high school students also asked me for help at home. I realised there was an opportunity to start up a tutoring programme and in February 2004 I officially launched my new business.
In February 2005 I opened a branch in Hamilton and this was doing really well. Once again word-of-mouth has been my best form of advertising as students and parents share with others the successes they are having.
In July 2005 I opened a branch in Taupo. By the end of 2006 I was losing the personal touch I wanted with my customers because of the distances so I looked into the option of franchising.
My philosophy is that students learn best in tutoring on a one-to-one basis. In mathZwise we have no more than 2 students per tutor. This is guaranteed. Therefore the students are working in an ideal situation and this is one of the reasons we are having so much success. The lessons are individually planned by the tutor and the student works at a pace that is right for them. Students are encouraged to ask questions and bring any schoolwork they may be having difficulty with. We also have fun which is so important when building trusting and caring relationships between students and tutors.
I only take on the best franchisees, who are carefully screened to ensure they have the same caring, positive approach to education as I do.
Many of our students are now top of their Maths classes and achieving results they never thought possible! This is the realisation of a dream for me.
